Longing for Home: Embracing a Homesick Faith

Homesickness is an experience etched into the lives of those who have answered the call to serve their country, along with their families who stand beside them. If you’ve journeyed through deployments, TDY, new assignments, or uprooted lives due to military service, then you know the weight of homesickness all too well. Your life’s path has been marked by relocations, by missed birthdays, holidays, and significant life events. This is a unique vantage point—a vantage point that allows you to connect your own experiences with the spiritual truth that homesickness is not only a physical reality, but also a spiritual yearning woven into the hearts of believers in Christ.

1Homesickness for a Tangible Home

Recall the last time you felt the tug of homesickness. The concept of home is a powerful one. We are not created for a nebulous heaven far removed from our earthly experiences; rather, we are created for this very earth. The texture of this world—the mountains, rivers, trees, the aroma of coffee, the thrill of adventure—speaks to our souls.

We are crafted from the very soil we walk on, deeply connected to this earth. When we contemplate heaven, questions arise: Will we lose the tangible joys we hold dear? Will we still relish the simple pleasures that warm our hearts? The truth is that our eternal destiny is not a departure to a distant heaven, but a restoration of the earth—a new earth and a new city, fully restored to its intended glory.

The Heart of Home is Relationship

Throughout history, God has sought to dwell with His people. From Eden to the wilderness, from the tabernacle to the incarnation of Christ, God’s desire to be with us is evident. The new earth signifies the ultimate fulfillment of this desire—the Triune God establishing His throne permanently on earth.

The concept of home transcends mere location; it is rooted in relationship. As we long for our heavenly home, we long to be in God’s presence, to see His face, to commune with Him in a way we’ve never experienced before. The presence of God is what truly makes home, home. We anticipate a closeness that we’ve only glimpsed in moments of divine intimacy on this side of eternity.

The Perfected Home Awaits

Imagine a place where all suffering, pain, and tears are extinguished. This is the promise of Revelation 21:4. The elimination of sorrow is not a temporary relief, but an everlasting reality. Every tear of anguish will be replaced by tears of overwhelming joy.

The sense of loss that homesickness can evoke will find its redemption here, where the very source of our pain is eradicated. The new earth is a realm where sorrow is foreign, where mourning turns to dancing, and where pain is transformed into wholeness. This vision is not a distant dream—it is a future certain and unwavering.

The Certain Home

Dear friends, we stand at the precipice of a certain home—a dwelling place beyond our present imagination, yet deeply rooted in the essence of what we know and love. Our yearning for this place is not a futile longing; it is anchored in the promises of God. Each word in Revelation 21:1-5 is trustworthy and true, for our God cannot lie. If you have placed your trust in Christ, you are bound for a home that surpasses all earthly homes—a place prepared for you by the Savior Himself.

As we navigate the challenges of life, let us cultivate our homesickness—a sign of our spiritual health. Let us meditate on our future hope, let our present experiences be foretastes of the glory to come, and let the longing for the perfected home propel us forward in faith.
